It is the time of year when my yoga class has stopped because everyone is away on holidays. I wen tot a talk the other day with Lama Gyurme. He told the group the holidays was not a destination but a state of mind! This state of mind can be cultivated all year round. It is to give yourself a break from the constant turning over of the thoughts in your head, being constantly led by them and at their mercy. Holidays are meditation practice and the clarity of mind that it brings.
This is a practice I have been using recently after yoga. Find an upright position to sit in, using support if you need it. Tune in to your breath and feel its coming and going in your body. When you are ready start to count down from 27 to zero, mentally saying a number on the in and out breath. Breath in 27, breath out 26, breath in 25 and so on... When you get to zero, continue to notice your breath and any thoughts or feelings that arise, without diving in and getting involved in them, seeing them come and letting them pass. You are no longer at the mercy of your thoughts, caught up in them but the observer. You are something more than the sum total of your thoughts. What is this? Enjoy your serious play on holidays!
